How to Import and Spend
To import and spend from a wallet.dat file using Bitcoin Core, follow these steps carefully. This process gives you full access to the Bitcoin held within that wallet, assuming it has a spendable balance.
✅ Step-by-Step Guide to Import and Spend from wallet.dat
1. Install Bitcoin Core
- Download Bitcoin Core from the official website: https://bitcoincore.org
- Install it on your computer and let it fully sync with the blockchain (this may take hours or days, depending on your system and internet).
2. Locate Your Bitcoin Core Data Directory
- Default locations:
- Windows: C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Bitcoin
- macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Bitcoin
- Linux: ~/.bitcoin
3. Backup Existing Wallet
- Before replacing anything, backup your current wallet.dat file if one exists.
- Copy it to a safe location: e.g., wallet.dat.bak
4. Replace with the recovered wallet.dat
- Close Bitcoin Core completely.
- Replace the existing wallet.dat file in the data directory with the recovered wallet.dat.
- Make sure the file name is exactly: wallet.dat.
5. Start Bitcoin Core
- Launch the Bitcoin Core wallet again.
- It should now recognize the addresses and balances from the recovered wallet.
6. Optional: Rescan Blockchain
If balances do not appear immediately:
- Open the Debug Console (Help > Debug Window > Console)
- Run the command:
- rescan blockchain
This will search for transactions related to the new wallet.
7. Send/Spend Bitcoin
- Once the wallet is loaded and shows a balance:
- Go to the "Send" tab.
- Enter the recipient’s Bitcoin address and amount.
- Set the transaction fee.
- Click "Send" and confirm.
